A Match Is Found!
Hi,
Talked to the Bone Marrow Transplant Coordiantor in Cinci. They found a perfect match…which is an 8/8. I guess that is what they consider to be perfect. They said matching on 9 and 10 isn’t that big of a deal. There is a different standard of "perfect" from one center to the next, it seems. Anyhow, there is 2 more donor samples in the lab and they could possibly be a 10/10. We should get the results from the other donors next week or the week after…might take longer because of the holiday.
So, now we are faced with a HUGE decision!! A decision no parent should ever have to make for their child. Nick is doing well on the Gleevec and this could maintain him through high school or longer. No one knows what the long term effects of Gleevec are on children ...it is too new.
On the transplant side...this is a very risky procedure with a very scary mortality rate. But, it is the only known cure for CML.
So, do you transplant now while he is young and "healthy" or do you wait and see what happens with the Gleevec??
We have spoke with one Oncologist that say's wait it out for 18 months and see what happens
and two other oncologists that say transplant if you have a perfect match.
So, faced with this decision, I ask for you prayers....
Have a wonderful weekend!!!
